Hugely respected as one of South Africa’s premier musicians and producers, West Nkosi started out as a pennywhistling “Kwela Man”, before moving on to the instrument he is now internationally renowned for – the Sax. West was very instrumental in the rise to popularity of Mbaqanga music in which the Sax plays a central role. However, it is his achievements as a producer that stand out most, having produced all of Ladysmith Black Mambazo’s albums (pre Paul Simon’s “Graceland”) as well as several of the internationally acclaimed albums by Mahlatini & The Mahotella Queens. Tragically, West Nkosi died in 1998 as a result of injuries sustained in a car accident.
