SuperRailBand
Best known as the first group featuring Mali-born vocalist Salif Keita, who sang with the band from 1968 until leaving to form his own group, Les Amabssadeurs, in 1972. Although deeply rooted in the Mandique tradition of harmony singing, the Super Rail Band cast a dance-inspiring spell by incorporating R&B-influenced horn charts, Zairian-style guitar playing and Cuban improvisation. Led by saxophonist Kabine Keita and guitarist and arranger Djeli Madi Toukara, the Super Rail Band became the house band for the Bamako railway station buffet in 1969. Other influential band members included saxophone players Tidiane Kone and Ledy Youla, and pianist Alfred Coulibaly. — Craig Harris
