Sikiru Ayinde, better known to his fans as Barrister, is the first and foremost practitioner of Fuji music. Fuji, which has no real connection with Japanese music, has been slightingly referred to as "Juju without the guitars," and there is a grain of truth to this: it consists of intense Yoruba drumming, over which are layered Muslim-inflected lyrics. Barrister's outfit, the Supreme Fuji Commanders, consists of 25 performers, and their stage show is a blend of powerful drumming and praise song lyrics. |
