Idir is one of the most important figures in the Amazigh (Berber) Cultural Renaissance in Algeria. His music is pure poetry accompanied by his melodic voice. It is largely acoustic guitar based. "Vava Inouva", from the CD by the same name, is one of the most beautifully simple tunes ever recorded in any language. His newest album, Identités, is a kind of tribute, including many of Idir's best songs (including some from early in his career that were not available on CD) in duets with artists like Orchestre National de Barbes, Zebda, Gnawa Diffusion and a number of other French, Celtic and African artists. |
